Pocket Reduction

After conservative periodontal therapy with scaling and root planning are completed, a pocket reduction procedure may be recommended. This procedure is often done to address remaining pockets around teeth which are too deep to clean with normal at-home brushing and flossing. Reducing your pockets with your improved home care and professional maintenance can improve your chances of maintaining the health of your gums, bone and teeth.

For pocket reduction, the gums and teeth are cleaned with the gums gently folded back. The gums are then secured back into place. Often times, any irregular damaged bone surfaces are reshaped allowing quick healing of both the gum and bone.

When pocket reduction is performed, most patients are surprised that the only usual pain medication given post-operatively is Advil/Ibuprofen. There is no pain expected during the actual pocket reduction procedure. When you are at home recovering, most patients state that they have discomfort which is a 1 or 2 out of 10. Rarely, does pocket reduction cause more discomfort.

Case 1: Pocket Reduction with Crown and Bridge

“My treatment plan with Dr. Kubikian was over a two year period. This gave me ample opportunity to observe him as a person and doctor. He is a very personable and caring. I observed that he was highly thought of and liked by the other doctors. I always felt that he was genuinely invested in my care. He was mindful and respectful of time and therefore prompt. He often followed up a visit with a call to check on my well being. I recommend him highly.” Barbara, Philadelphia, PA

Case 2: Pocket Reduction with future composite splitting

“I consider myself very fortunate to have met Dr. K when I did. Other dentists had advised there was nothing else to do but to pull all of my teeth and replace them with implants. This all took place approximately three years ago when I was also going through some pretty tough times in my life, when it seemed like I couldn’t bear another thing to go wrong.

Dr. K took a look at my X-rays and thought maybe he could save my teeth. I made the appointment and he started the work. Within a couple of months the transformation was unbelievable. Not only did he save my teeth, but he also made me want to smile again. Friends and family just couldn’t believe the difference.

I have since moved to Florida but will be returning in August for a visit, and one of my first trips will be to see Dr. K. I would recommend him to all of my family and friends. He is not only a great dentist, but also a kind and considerate person.”
